The Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula)

The Venus flytrap is naturally found in the wetlands of the southeastern United States and is only located in the wild within a 60-mile radius of Wilmington, North Carolina. It is a vulnerable species due to habitat loss, poaching, and over-collection. These plants are likely the most well-known bug-eating plants, also known as insectivores or carnivorous plants.

Venus flytraps are small plants that grow low to the ground. They have the unique ability to catch and eat insects with their leaves, which have hinged traps on them. These traps have sensitive hairs they use to sense insects. When an insect gets too close, it triggers the hinges, snapping them shut in a split-second, trapping the insect inside.

Once inside, the plant secretes digestive enzymes that break down the bug and allows the plant to absorb nutrients from it. This process takes several days, and once the plant is done, it reopens its trap to catch another bug. These plants have fascinated observers for centuries and are a popular subject for botanists and plant enthusiasts.

If you find the Venus flytrap as interesting as we do, you’ll be happy to know several other plants like it. Other carnivorous plants are the pitcher plant, sundew, and bladderwort.

Pitcher plants (Sarracenia spp.)

Pitcher plants are also found in North Carolina. They eat bugs like the Venus flytrap. However, their method is a bit different. Instead of having hinged leaves that snap shut, they have a leaf shaped like a cup filled with digestive fluid.

The plant also produces nectar that attracts insects. The plant has to wait for an unsuspecting and unlucky bug to fall into the cup, getting stuck in the digestive fluids, which then digests it.

Sundews (Drosera spp.)

The Sundews have leaves with many sticky hairs on their leaves that work like sticky paper fly traps. The bugs get stuck and cannot fly away due to the residue. Then the plant secretes a digestive enzyme, similar to the Venus flytrap, that breaks down the insect’s body to get nutrients from it.

Sundews are carnivorous plants, with somewhere around 194 different species in the family, making them one of the largest predatory plant groups.

Bladderworts (Utricularia spp.)

These plants live in North Carolina’s wetlands and ponds and are a type of aquatic plant that eats bugs. Their method is unique to other carnivorous plants. They use traps that resemble little bladders.

Once an insect’s movement triggers this plant, the bladderwort sucks in water, which pulls the insect inside and traps it. Then the plant secretes the digestive fluids to digest the bug.
